Not Just For Christmas

Stephen Melton

I am a sculptor whose work explores humanity’s complex relationship with the natural world. Working across sculpture, installation and photography, my practice examines the ecological consequences of human activity and the interconnectedness between people, species and their environments.

I frequently work with overlooked or discarded material, including road casualties, fishing by-catch and animals lost through the exotic pet trade. These specimens are often translated into durable materials such as bronze or preserved in resin, creating works that blur the boundaries between memorial, artefact and sculpture. Through this transformation from ephemeral remains to enduring form, my work acknowledges the lives of these creatures while reflecting on the systems that led to their deaths.

Using beauty and intricacy to draw viewers in, my works often reveal more unsettling narratives about consumption, exploitation and environmental loss, inviting reflection on humanity’s custodianship of the natural world.
